What’s the difference between sterling silver and silver plated? 🤔

Toolally’s semi-fine jewellery is crafted from gold vermeil and 925 sterling silver. But what does 925 sterling silver actually mean?
Sterling silver is an alloy, made from 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper or zinc - that’s where the 925 part of the name comes from. The small percentage of metal such as copper or zinc is needed to ensure the material is hard enough and therefore more durable; pure silver on its own is too soft to be formed into jewellery. As a bonus, our 925 sterling silver is recycled, which is better for the environment. 🙌
In contrast to sterling silver, silver plated means a metal - usually copper or brass - that is covered with a thin layer of silver. The thickness of the silver layer varies but is usually between 1 micron and 10 microns. This smaller amount of silver makes plated jewellery more affordable than sterling silver, but it can be tarnished or scratched more easily. The base metal of a silver plated item of jewellery is more likely to cause an allergic reaction and irritate skin.
There is room in your jewellery collection for all kinds of fabulous items, made from all materials and for many different occasions. Silver plated jewellery is an affordable option and therefore great for occasional costume pieces. After a while, though, silver plated jewellery will tarnish and need replacing. For longevity, enduring quality and shine, sterling silver is the best option. 🌟 You can wear the same sterling silver pieces day after day and, with regular cleaning using just a drop of mild washing up detergent and warm water, they can last a lifetime.
